A.C. casinos' winnings fall short
As reported by:
The Philadelphia Inquirer
The effects of fewer weekends and a labor strike hurt Atlantic City casinos' winnings last month. The 12 casinos reported a win, or what they kept from gamblers, of $375 million for November, down 1.1 percent from November 2003."Having those extra weekend days in the mix always means more business," said Linda Kassekert, chairwoman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. There were only four November weekends this year, compared with five last year."And then you had the residual impact of the strike that may have kept people away, so the month got off to a slow start," Kassekert said, referring to the strike from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31 of thousands of casino workers over wages and other issues. The casinos won $4.45 billion for the first 11 months of the year, up 6.7 percent, suggesting that the gambling market has benefitted from the addition of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which opened in July 2003.The Borgata ranked No. 1 in total win for slot machines and table games combined, at $53.4 million. Second was Bally's Atlantic City, with $47.7 million, and third was Trump Taj Mahal, with $41.3 million.Resorts Atlantic City, which opened a new hotel tower in July, also had a good month. It posted a 16 percent increase in total revenue, to $19.1 million. Resorts' win from table games was up 47 percent for the month, while its revenue from slots rose 9 percent. The casino announced yesterday that it was adding 750 slot machines.Tropicana Casino Resort posted gains after a garage collapse on Oct. 30, 2003, that killed four workers, blocked traffic around its perimeter for weeks, and cut into profit. Its total win was up 15 percent for the month.
