Bill would prohibit advertising gambling

Those Nevada casino billboards advertising "loosest slots in town" would have to leave Utah. But residents still could learn the Idaho winning lottery numbers under a bill being resurrected by a legislator from Logan, Utah.

Republican Representative Scott Wyatt says the bill would prohibit the advertising of activities that are illegal in Utah and is aimed primarily at gambling.

Wyatt said the gambling operations on Utah borders are taking away Utah money while Utah gains the social costs.

Frank Pignanelli is lobbyist and legal counsel for West Wendover, Nevada. He says the ban probably would have very little impact on reducing the social costs of gambling.

He says problem gamblers generally rely on more convenient outlets, especially the Internet.

The bill would only restrict the advertising of the illegal activity. It would not stop casinos from promoting their spas and golf courses, and it would not stop newspapers from running game lines or lottery numbers.
