Blackpool Council has submitted its bid to win the country's sole licence for a Las Vegas-style casino.

The Lancashire resort has been backed by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) as the only city in the region that should be allowed to build a super casino.

Local authorities that want the much sought-after licence must send their applications to the government's Casino Advisory Panel by tomorrow.

The Panel will shortlist locations, before making a recommendation to the Culture Secretary by the end of the year.

In addition to the one casino, 16 licences for smaller developments are on offer.

Leader of Blackpool Council, councillor Roy Fisher, said: "This is a momentous day. After a rollercoaster of a ride over previous months, and even years, we have finally submitted what we firmly believe to be a winning bid.

"We are aware there is a lot of competition, but we have put forward a strong case that we have meticulously researched and developed, and which will provide a kick start for long-term regeneration, and transforming Blackpool into a world-class destination resort.
