Boyd Gaming joins competition for Pennsylvania license

Boyd Gaming Corp. announced Wednesday it will seek one of Pennsylvannia's two at-large, stand-alone gaming licenses and spend $325 million during the first of four phases to build a 3,000 slot machine casino and entertainment complex.
The casino will be 35 miles northwest of Philadelphia on a 125-acre site. Boyd Gaming officials said they don't believe it will take business from its expansive Atlantic City resort.
"We've been looking at Pennsylvania for some time, and we believe this opportunity fits well for our company," Boyd Gaming spokesman Rob Stillwell said.
Besides slots, the initial phase would include four restaurants, lounges and a parking structure. The casino would be located in Limerick Township adjacent to a planned 120-store outlet mall expected to open 2007.
Pennsylvania's Gaming Control Board has spent much of this year writing regulations to cover the licensing of 14 gaming sites around the state that will be restricted to slot machines.
According to Pennsylvania's plans, two established small resorts in the state can have up to 500 slot machines each while seven racetracks can open 5,000-slot machine racinos. Five gaming licenses for up to 5,000 slot machines each will be awarded to two locations in Philadelphia, one location in Pittsburgh and two at-large locations to be determined in the state.
