POKER firm Sportingbet thanked model Caprice for helping it to trump rivals in the online gaming sector yesterday after annual profits quadrupled.

While groups such as £3-bn valued PartyGaming have warned that growth in the poker market is slowing down, Sportingbet said the number of players joining its Paradise Poker arm since the end of July was "materially higher" than a year earlier.

This was attributed to a high-profile advertising campaign that featured Caprice on a desert island offering punters the chance to play poker against her during November.

Sportingbet said 37,680 new accounts had been opened to play Paradise Poker over the past 10 weeks, with the average daily rake-up 71% on the same stage of last year.

The upbeat comments on current trading came as Sportingbet said pre-tax profits during the year to July 31 totalled £40.8m.
