Dome super-casino bid faces new row

A fresh row over the Millennium Dome casino bid is brewing as a series of public hearings into the venues wanting to host a Las Vegas-style attraction opens.

It is understood the company behind the controversial bid to host Britain's first super-casino at the Dome has apologised after misrepresenting the views of religious leaders.

AEG presented documents for publication by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport purporting to be written by the Greenwich Peninsula Chaplaincy. It suggested that the clergy is broadly positive about the casino plan, which prompted site chaplain the Rev Malcolm Torry to protest that the opposite is true.

The row comes as AEG prepares for a public hearing into its application on Wednesday. The hearing will be the second by the Casino Advisory Panel after it opens a series of Examinations in Public by looking at the application for Wembley.

Further hearings will be held around the country this and next week to study proposals for a super-casino in Cardiff, Glasgow, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester and Blackpool. Only one super-casino is initially being permitted under the terms of the Gambling Act 2005, to be selected from the provisional shortlist drawn up in May.
