Drunk Drivers Targeted in Iowa
| 13 June 2009 |
DES MOINES, Iowa, June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Iowa State Patrol and Department of Public Safety have announced stepped up traffic enforcement efforts during the month of June on Iowa's highways.
In the past years, these stepped up traffic enforcement efforts have also resulted in a considerable increase in drunk driving arrests. This year will be no different, with the first special enforcement beginning on the weekend of June 6th. The published schedule can be found at http://grllaw.blogspot.com.
This year will be no different. The State Patrol, in a program dubbed "Safe Saturdays" will be specifically targeting impaired driving in addition to seatbelt and speed violations. Like most traffic crackdowns, the increased traffic infraction enforcement inevitably leads to more contact with drivers and more contact with potentially impaired drivers throughout the night. As the nights turn into early morning hours, the focus for these law enforcement agencies turns from mere seatbelt and speed violations to specifically targeting potential drunk driving (see http://www.grllaw.com/PracticeAreas/Drunk-Driving.asp for Iowa DUI laws) offenders. This increased crackdown during the month of June is not without justification. Last year one of the deadliest months was the month of June with a significant portion of those fatalities coming during the late evening and early morning hours.
Robert Rehkemper, a partner and attorney at Gourley, Rehkemper & Lindholm, PLC (http://www.GRLLaw.com), says, "It is worth noting that while the State Patrol has published a specific 'crackdown' schedule, it is often the case that other law enforcement agencies as well as the State Patrol will also step up enforcement on non publicized nights and weekends as well."
