Fake Profile of Pam Anderson at MySpace.com
| 13 September 2006 |
MySpace.com, which has become an essential part of many teenagers' social life, is an online hangout where members can check out one another's profiles, share photos and messages. The social-networking sensation on the Web is home to more than 100 million members, and home of many celebrities.
However, the proliferation of celebrity posers frustrates the many MySpace members who use the site to follow news and send fan mail to pop icons and other prominent personalities. The most recent victim of "MySpace identity theft" was Pamela Anderson.
MySpace regular Morgan Kapassakis, a 17-year-old in New York City, came across Pamela Anderson's profile page and decided to fire off a note to the actress. Ms. Kapassakis realized she had been taken for a ride when she received a reply containing an unsavory comment from the actress. "I would have felt better if I hadn't gotten a response," Miss Kapassakis says. "Then at least I might think she was real."
Pamela Anderson's spokeswoman says that the star doesn't have a MySpace page. Although MySpace rules prohibit impostors, there's no verification process currently in place. A MySpace spokeswoman says the number of requests to investigate celebrity impostors is "relatively small," though its staff monitors for copyright infringement and other abuses. She declined to comment on specific efforts to filter out the fakes.
With the recent nomination of Pamela Anderson as one of the most searched for names according to AOL.com, it comes as no surprise that "wannabes" would want to capitalize on her search popularity. Bob Greer, Search Marketing Directory for Pamela Anderson Poker Site.com said -- "The popularity of online Social Networking has exploded. In weeks past, search giant Google bid $900 million dollars to become the exclusive search provider for MySpace.com. We hope that with their new found equity injection come increased levels of security to help prevent copyright infringement and other forms of abuse".
Anderson's online popularity continues as she pushes to make web users aware of her new site, PamelaAndersonPokerSite.com
