Federal commission sues Vegas casino for alleged age, sex discrimination

The lawsuit against the Riviera Hotel and Casino was filed Tuesday on behalf of former casino dealer and floor supervisor Jean Sylvia, 61. She claims co-workers and supervisors harassed her for five years until she left the casino in 1999.
"It's part of the gaming business that gets accepted in the older casinos," Sylvia, now retired and living in Delray Beach, Fla., said in a telephone interview. "It's a hard business to get old in," she said. "They used to call me old bag, grandma."
A spokesman for the Riviera did not return calls seeking comment.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission seeks compensation and punitive damages from the Riviera Operating Corp. It also seeks to have the Riviera implement new management training.
Commission attorney Anna Park said her office will sue another casino in Las Vegas and one in Reno within two to three weeks. She said those suits are related to hiring practices and wages, adding that the quick flurry of Nevada casino lawsuits is a coincidence.
