French Lick casino nears approval

State gambling regulators and an investment group chosen earlier this year to build a casino in Orange County are expected to sign an operating contract with the state in the coming weeks.
A meeting last week between the Indiana Gaming Commission's executive staff and representatives of Blue Sky Casino LLC resulted in a final draft of an agreement, said the commission's director, Ernie Yelton.
“I see no deal-breakers,” Yelton said, though he added that there are still minor differences to work out in further negotiations.
Progress toward the contract has been slowed by two months of negotiations between the commission and Blue Sky executives.
The state Gaming Commission gave conditional approval in June to a proposal from Blue Sky, which is made up of Bloomington billionaire William Cook's company - The Cook Group - and Indianapolis-based Lauth Property Group.
Cook bought the French Lick Springs Resort & Spa last spring for $25 million and is now in the midst of a $100 million restoration. Lauth will build the $70 million casino, which is scheduled to open in December 2006.
The historic West Baden Springs Hotel is also being refurbished and should open in 2007.
Details of the agreement will not be released until after the contract is signed.
