Gambling plan thrown out amid super casino concern

A BID to open a gambling mecca on Blackpool's Central Promenade has been thrown out - because it could harm the resort's super casino bid.
The Noble organisation, which owns Coral Island, wanted to convert the former Palace nightclub into a three-storey gaming and cabaret club which would accommodate 900 people.
But councillors on Blackpool Council's development control committee unanimously threw out the application, saying if it was passed it would open the floodgates for other small casino bids.
Coun Mary Smith said: "We need to concentrate on the bigger picture and see where out super casino bid takes us before we allow any small casino applications. Blackpool is waiting for the regional casino decision and it would be foolish to spoil our chances for that."
Councillors voted in line with officers' recommendations to refuse the two applications for 20 gaming tables, 20 jackpot tables and 32 roulette machines as well as a 60-cover restaurant and a 30-seater showbar in the three-storey building which backs on to Bank Hey Street.
Town hall bosses had feared the Palace project could jeopardise Blackpool's hopes of winning the UK's first super-casino licence which would lead to the creation of a £350m casino, hotel and conference centre on land at the neighbouring Central Station site.
It is believed the Noble group will appeal.
A SOUTH Shore casino has been given the go-ahead to expand. The Grosvenor Casino in the Sandcastle building will expand its first floor into a restaurant, allowing more space to create further gaming tables on the ground floor.
