Jones Wants Gambling Amendment

As reported by: The Associated Press
Former Governor Brereton Jones and others of like mind are proposing a constitutional amendment that would legalize all sorts of casino-style games at Kentucky's eight horse racing tracks.

The plan would also earmark state proceeds from expanded gambling for such needs as education and healthcare.

Jones was governor from 1991 through 1995. He won't say who shares his idea, but adds that he hopes to draft legislation for discussion before the November fourth election.

Although he says he's still philosophically opposed to gambling, Jones said he can't ignore the millions of dollars Kentuckians spend gambling in other states.

He says Kentucky has faced strained budgets for the last few fiscal years and could use a new source of revenue.
