Montgomery County Woman Claims $46.6 Million Powerball(R) Jackpot Prize
| 19 June 2009 |
MIDDLETOWN, Pa., June 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A Wyndmoor, Montgomery County, woman has claimed a Powerball(R) jackpot worth $46.6 million cash from the Feb. 28 drawing. She claimed a share of a larger jackpot split with one other top-prize winning ticket sold in Delaware.
Palmira Nicolo had the Pennsylvania Lottery winning jackpot ticket that matched all five white balls, 03-16-20-42-58, and the red Powerball number, 07, to win the Feb. 28 jackpot, which grew over 12 drawings to an annuity value of $174.4 million. Each of the two top-prize winning tickets sold was worth an annuity amount of $87.2 million or $46,629,112.16 cash, less 25 percent federal withholding.
Nicolo elected to take the $46,629,112.16 cash value of the jackpot.
Nicolo said she plays the Pennsylvania Lottery regularly and will continue to play, since she believes "the Lottery is doing a good thing supporting senior programs and services."
Nicolo purchased the winning ticket at the Plymouth Meeting Mall Customer Service Center, 500 Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County. The mall will receive a $100,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Nicolo presented the winning ticket for validation Wednesday afternoon at Lottery headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County. After examining the ticket and executing proprietary security measures, Lottery officials confirmed that it was a jackpot-winning ticket.
Nicolo is the 13th Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball jackpot winner since the state joined the multi-jurisdictional game in June 2002.
Powerball tickets are sold in 32 participating jurisdictions - 30 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands.
How to play Powerball: To play Powerball, players pay $1 and select five white balls from the first set of 59 numbers plus a single red ball, the Powerball, from a second set of 39 numbers. Players may select their own numbers using a Powerball play slip, or they may opt for computer-selected quick picks. Players must match all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball number to win the jackpot. There also are eight additional ways for players to win a cash prize.
Powerball features an option called PowerPlay. For an extra $1 per Powerball play (game), players can multiply their Powerball prizes by 2, 3, 4, or 5 times the original prize amount for all prizes EXCEPT the jackpot. Prizes can multiply up to $1 million.
