Odds favor record betting on this year's Super Bowl

Sports bettors who just can't help themselves will wager an estimated $4-billion on this year's Super Bowl, the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling reported Thursday.

The amount is more than four times the record $90.7-million wagered in Las Vegas last year, and includes bets placed via the internet, through bookies and even office pools, the Council said.

It calls the Super Bowl the single most wagered sporting event of the year.

"Many who would never have ventured out to bet with a 'real bookie' will be quite comfortable placing that bet online," said Pat Fowler, FCCG Executive Director. "Most gamblers who bet online aren't even aware that it's illegal in the United States."

The Council says calls to its HelpLine indicate sports betting is among top three types of gambling which cause difficulties for Floridians. Calls also show that the number of younger gamblers is increasing.

"Gambling on sports is highly popular, not only among adults, but with young people who are gambling in growing numbers," Fowler said. "In fact, Florida's most recent youth survey found that more than 55% of students in grades 6-12 report having gambled in the last year."

The Council reports Florida has a significant percentage of gamblers across all age groups.

It says more than half a million residents suffer from serious to severe gambling problems.

"For many in the state, Super Bowl Sunday is a day of desperation, not celebration," Fowler said, adding, "The people who will feel the Super Bowl losses most are the families and loved ones of those with a gambling problem."
