Opponents Speak Up Over Proposed Red Rock Casino

In Red Rock Canyon, plans for a new Station Casino resort have hit a roadblock. Some people who live in the community say the idea will ruin their view. We're talking about a 67 acre piece of land at the corner of Charleston and 215. The proposed Red Rock Station would include 90 thousand square feet of casino space and 400 hotel rooms. News 3's Dana Wagner reports casinos execs were supposed to go before the county planning commission, but they've put those plans on hold.
Late Wednesday night, Station Casinos decided to postpone their meeting before county planners because of newfound opposition to the plan. They want to build the casino right in the shadow of Red Rock, and some neighbors don't like it one bit. "My immediate reaction was this will be like a wart on the end of your nose. You know it's there and every time you open your eyes, there it is."
Chuck Kleber is a member of the friends of Red Rock Canyon. He says a proposed casino at Charleston and 215 would ruin the view of Red Rock. "So now, here we have two towers, as you can see in the background, there they would stand, directly in front of Red Rock Canyon as you approach it. We don't need this."
Stations already have the proper zoning for a large hotel and casino, with movie theaters, arcades, a bowling alley and sports book, but they need permission from county commissioners to build a tower higher than 100 feet. They want to a 300 foot tower. "Keep it to 75 to 80 feet. That's low enough that's it's not going to impinge on this beautiful accident of nature that we'll never get back again. It's in our hands not to destroy this and that's what things like this are doing."
Casino Spokeswoman Leslie Pittman is out of town, but she told us by phone, "I'd like to see their concerns. Maybe we can address them, but this project will be built."
Opponents say, "My personal interest and my colleagues is to preserve Red Rock Canyon and its beauty. This does nothing for it and does a lot against it." We were in this neighborhood Wednesday talking to people. We met of group of mothers with their children in a park that's right next door. None of them seemed concerned about this new casino. In fact, they embraced it. So the battle lines have been drawn.
Station Casinos will go before the county planning commission in about two weeks to seek approval of a three hundred foot tower. It's a public meeting and everyone is welcome to give their input.
