Kerry Packer, media tycoon and one of Australia's richest men, is planning a series of casinos across Scotland as part of a £300 million push into the UK gaming industry.

Packer, under the brand name Aspers, is the latest name to join a list of major casino operators all hoping to cash in on an expected relaxation of UK gambling laws.

Along with joint venture partner Damian Aspinall, Packer is in talks over a potential site in Aberdeen and is also assessing locations in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Andrew Macdonald, director of gaming at Packer's private family investment vehicle, Consolidated Press Holdings, said: "We are looking at a number of opportunities at the moment which are at different stages.

"While we are involved with about 12 potential projects, we expect to pursue five."

In Australia, Packer already owns Melbourne's Crown and Perth's Burswood casinos, and is well-known for his love of casinos, having reputedly lost £11m in a single visit to a London one in 1999.
