PokerPro a natural for tech-age play

The popularity of playing poker on the Internet in spite of the fact the practice exists in legal limbo, is staggering. By some estimates it's a $2 billion dollar a year industry, with more than one million players going online to play each month.

I've always considered it somewhat paradoxical that for a game in which a talent to "read" your opponents' emotions are as integral to success as skill, poker attracts the same fascination in the virtual world as in the real one.

It is this very phenomenon that may fuel the appeal of a new computerized poker table that eliminates the need for a live dealer and real cards and chips, just like the Internet version, but which brings players together in person to play against one another: a marriage made in poker heaven between the best of the virtual and real worlds.

The innovation is PokerPro, which was developed and is marketed by PokerTek, Inc. of Charlotte, N.C. It won the Platinum Award (first place) for the Most Innovative Technology Product for 2005 presented by Casino Journal at the Gaming Technology Summit held last May in Las Vegas.
