Rendell’s veto of slots amendment draw questions about measure’s status

Pennsylvania Senate Republicans have no current plan to challenge Governor Ed Rendell's veto of an amendment to Pennsylvania's slots legislation that included a measure to ban state lawmakers from having ownership interests in gambling operations despite their owns claims that a typo in the veto makes the veto invalid.
Any challenge to the veto would have to come from an "aggrieved party," such as a potential slots licensee, according to a lawyer to the Senate Republicans.
The controversy came about when Republicans said the version of legislation Rendell vetoed was defunct after he referred to a printer's number in his veto message. The printer's number was assigned to an earlier version of the legislation that was amended November 18, two days before a final version passed, the Associated Press reports.
Rendell's office, however, insisted the typo did not negate his intention to reject the measure.
In October, Republicans attempted to challenge Rendell's intended veto of a farming regulation bill by citing a technicality when the vetoed bill was returned to the House. The Commonwealth Court dismissed the challenge and James Gardner Colins, the president judge of the court, scolded Republicans for bringing the lawsuit, questioning whether it was politically motivated.
