British bookmaker William Hill stopped accepting casino and poker bets from online customers in the United States on Wednesday, amid increasing uncertainty over whether U.S. authorities would effectively outlaw online gambling.
The company, which already had blocked American gamblers from betting on its online sports markets, said in a statement it would now also block customers with a U.S. address or U.S.-issued credit card from its casino and poker business.

The decision was reached in a company board meeting Tuesday, chief executive David Harding said.

U.S. Senate leaders have been trying to include a measure to prohibit people from using credit cards to settle Internet gambling debts in the Defense Department's budget.

Preventing the use of credit cards would effectively shut down online gambling.

The duration of William Hill's suspension is uncertain, with the firm saying it would wait until the “scope and enforceability” of U.S. state and federal gaming laws had been made clear.
