Video poker players don't get enough respect

Harrah's Joliet Casino & Hotel, one of the few properties in the Greater Chicago area gaming market to offer what knowledgeable video poker devotees regard as "playable games," recently reduced some pay tables, adding to the frustration that skilled players have felt since casino gambling was introduced around here a decade ago.According to General Manager Joe Domenico, Illinois regional president for Harrah's Entertainment, it was a decision based strictly on the hostile business environment in Illinois. "The climate in Illinois causes a supply and demand situation because of the limitation on (gaming) positions and the taxes we pay," Domenico said. "With all the new slot products being introduced and with limited positions, we are going to institute those products that perform at a significant premium to some of the products you mentioned (video poker). While we still offer these products, there will be a price premium for customers to play these games."Video poker players already have to bet twice as much as slot players at Harrah's properties to derive the same player's club benefits. Reducing the pay tables further adds to the price that gamblers must pay for playing the games."Our (video) poker players are very savvy and recognize the games that give them the best advantage and promotional offers," Domenico noted. "We value our poker customers, but as a business we need to be realistic as to the business environment and the prices we can obtain for our product offerings."In spite of the pay table reductions, Harrah's Joliet is one of the few casinos in the market to place a premium on the number of video poker games it offers. There is even a large dedicated section filled with a variety of games, including a bank of quarter Double-Double Bonus progressives.
