Yarmouth could be a gambling capital

Yarmouth could land the economic jackpot of a new-style regional casino, attracting more than three million visitors a year.
The scheme, backed by the Hilton Group, was last night predicted to transform the resort into the gambling capital of the East Coast.
It would be expected to attract 3.3 million visitors a year, making it the biggest tourist attraction in East Anglia.
The plans - which would include a four-star hotel, multiplex cinema and bowling alley - are being hailed as a big boost to Yarmouth's regeneration.
But, existing casino operators and some clergymen have already voiced concern about the proposal.
The scheme, being put forward by the Pleasure Beach in a joint venture partnership with leading property developer Henry Boot Developments, is planned for a 100,000sq ft site next to, and owned by, the amusement park, in South Beach Parade.
The borough council has already resolved to grant outline planning permission on the site for a leisure complex including a casino.
Yesterday, the Tory-controlled Cabinet met to discuss plans for a regional casino, and it is expected to back the idea at a meeting of the executive on March 22.
The casino proposal will be progressed if, as expected, the Government's new gambling law is passed in the next two months.
Developers are confident that Yarmouth will be well placed, as a seaside town in need of regeneration, to clinch one of the eight national licences for a regional casino that will be initially offered.
